Customize It

I decided to use my reusable grocery bag as my customizable object. I always try to remind myself to carry my bag with me when going to get groceries since it reduces the amount of plastic I use, and it is easier to carry things since it is sturdier then a plastic bad. Some of the characteristics of my bag that stand out to me are the following:

· Has handles to carry it on my shoulder

· I can knot the handles

· Makes it easy to carry my groceries than I would if I used a plastic bag

After mock interviewing my item I understood that my use for it personally was very limited to just my groceries. However, after understanding it better I saw that it could be used to house more than just those items. Although, the bag may not be the most fashionable of accessories, I learned that it can in fact be a fashion statement if one decided to use it daily. I also saw that reusable bags are great for housing items in your room that you want to keep in one organized area. These different uses helped open my eyes to how I could possibly utilize this bag and remix its use. Since I wanted more inspiration, I gave my bag to my roommates and had them utilize it for a few days and watched how others used the bag. In one instance they used it as a grocery bag, but the other times they had folded it up and decided to use it as coaster for their tea.

Since there was such a wide variety of different ideas that went with this one bag, I decided I was going to laundry the bag and then use it as a pillowcase. I wanted to remix this bag to the maximum it could be remixed and decided to turn it into a pillowcase. This related to the “Everything is a Remix” because I did not create something new. I borrowed ideas that others before me had created. I may have changed the function of my bag, but it was still the original bag I had used to tote around my groceries. Although I did not sew my bag into a new pillowcase due to the fact I still need it for my groceries, I was able to use the bag’s opening to make a pseudo pillow case by putting my pillow inside. A simple concept that proved to me that some ideas are not the best nor are they the most comfortable.
