Self Shape

Coming up with a shape that defines me was very difficult at first. Some of the types of questions that guided me to my final result came from asking myself to come up with shapes that I thought could encapsulate my personality the best. To do this I chose a three-dimensional shape that had the base that I thought would best represent me. This led me to make a rectangular prism to represent the balance that I try to keep in my life. The relatively equal sides of the rectangle are to represent my rationale side. I think I associate myself as often trying to fit into a box or a role that I think I belong to. However, life is not always as clear cut as I would like it to be, so my box has many different arrows that point in different directions to symbolize how my identity and shape are forever changing. For example, as someone who is very indecisive as a person, I often make decisions and then decide that was not the right decision and decide to change it. Or I decide to move on with bad decisions I decide to make.
As someone who is not the best artist, I found that drawing an abstract picture was too difficult for me due to the fact that I could not connect to what I was drawing. By making my shape in some ways more “concrete” and something that I felt was more tangible to me, my self shape was more authentic for how I see myself and identify myself. I uses materials like paper and colored pencils because those materials are ones, I am comfortable with and love using. I think this is largely due to the fact that everything around me is rapidly converting itself into digital forms, which isn’t bad, but I am partial to physical copies of my work.
Some colors that I chose for my box where green, blue, and pink. I chose the color blue because it is one of my favorite colors and it is a color I often associate with tranquility and sophistication, two things that I would like a bit more in my life, and things I strive towards so that I can be the best version of myself that I can be. I associate the color green with health and nature. Personally, I am someone who is interested in going into Dentistry and becoming a health care provider. I think healthcare is a very important thing that should be accessible to all humans that walk this earth. I hope to one day create a dental practice that is inclusive to all my future patients. The lines that I drew on the green portion are representative of steps or a ladder that I need to climb in order to reach my goals (I’m not the most creative person, so I did my best!). Green also represents nature to me, and I chose this because I am someone who tries my best to be more environmentally conscience. I think our world needs to be taken care of better so that the future of our planet is better secured. The last color that I wanted to highlight was pink. This color started as something I used to reject as a child. I thought that pink was too girly of a color and I decided that I hated pink when I was younger (even though that was a complete lie). Now as an adult, I have looser ideas for what societal norms and gender. I don’t think it makes sense to box in our likes and desires, so that’s why I drew pink on the top of my cube peeking out, to symbolize my newfound thoughts.
Around the front side of my box, I drew many starts to symbolize my ambition. The placement of it being in the front is because I think at the current stage of my life it is one of my main driving forces just due to the fact that I am in college currently. Every move I make seems to somehow steer me in some way or another to my future. This is also the forefront of my priorities presently. These ambitions also mirror my dreams in some ways, and they are usually apparent to most of the people who are close to me, which is why I wanted this to be upfront in its placement.
All these decisions I mad encapsulated how I see myself in a holistic way. I tried to represent different aspects of who I was in relation to my own symbolization. As someone who likes to intune herself into the small details, using many components was the best way to accomplish this.
